 Intercession

Intercession Principles—Joshua

Joshua, the successor to Moses, was consecrated by God to lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land (Numbers 27:18–23; Deuteronomy 1:38; 3:21, 22, 28; 31:3, 7, 8, 14, 23; 34:9).

The principles of physical warfare observed by this Biblical hero serve also as a pattern for us today in spiritual warfare as we battle for Israel to enter fully into its physical and spiritual Promised Land and for God’s end-time plans and purposes to be fulfilled finally through this nation.

 Principle 1:

 Authority
Joshua knew that all of his authority derived from God alone.

Joshua 1:3  “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I [the LORD] have given you, as I said to Moses.”

Luke 10:19  “Behold, I [Yeshua] give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

 Principle 2:

 Obedience

Joshua knew that he would prosper only if he obeyed God.

Joshua 1:7, 8  “Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

2 Corinthians 10:4–6  For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of [Messiah], and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

 Principle 3:

 Protection

Joshua knew that his protection was from God.

Joshua 1:9  “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Matthew 28:20  “…And lo, I [Yeshua] am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

 Principle 4:

 Leadership

Joshua knew that the true leader was God Himself.

Joshua 1:14, 15  “…But you shall pass before your brethren armed, all your mighty men of valor, and help them, until the LORD has given your brethren rest, as He gave you, and they also have taken possession of the land which the LORD your God is giving them…”

Micah 2:12, 13  “I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob, I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together like sheep of the fold, like a flock in the midst of their pasture…The one who breaks open will come up before them; they will break out, pass through the gate, and go out by it; their king will pass before them, with the LORD at their head.”

 Principle 5:

 Sanctification

Joshua knew that he and the people needed to be sanctified—completely set apart—to serve God.

Joshua 3:3–6  And they [the officers] commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it. Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.” And Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.” Then Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.

1 Peter 1:15, 16  But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

 Principle 6:

 Position

Joshua knew that Israel had to stand firm in their God-given position.

Joshua 3:7, 8  And the LORD said to Joshua…“You shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you have come to the edge of the water of the Jordan, you shall stand in the Jordan.’ ”

Zechariah 4:6   ...“ ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts.”

Psalm 149:6  Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand.

2 Chronicles 20:17  “ ‘…Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’…”

 Principle 7:

 Perseverance

Joshua knew that perseverance was necessary for final victory.

Joshua 3:17  Then the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the people had crossed completely over the Jordan.

Romans 11:26  And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob.”
